TO CREATE FIRST-EVER NETATHON
DATE POSTED: 12/1/1999
Landover, MD, December 1999 - United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) has selected Westminister WEB WORKS a Pointe Technology Group, Inc. Company (Pointe Technology) to design and develop UCP’s first-ever netathon at NETATHON.ORG, which will launch in February 2000.
NETATHON.ORG (www.netathon.org) is believed to be the world’s first portal fundraising and information site bringing together many charitable activities. Pointe Technology is responsible for the design and development of the interactive website, which will feature ways to contribute to UCP, as well as showcase supporters, provide disability information and offer special opportunities for new visitors.
“Pointe Technology is honored to be a part of such a charitable endeavor. We hope this collaborative effort is yet another means in which the Internet can make a positive change in people’s lives,” stated Jeff Townsend, president of Pointe Technology.
According to Charles McNelly, executive director of UCP, “We have turned to the Internet to replace our Telethon. We believe this is a much better way to raise funds and develop awareness of cerebral palsy and other disabilities. The interactivity of the NETATHON.ORG site will allow visitors greater knowledge of what they are contributing to and enable them to receive very specific information.”
Robert Watson, board president who has cerebral palsy, notes, “The computer and the Internet have been liberating for us folks with disabilities. Our organization has seen these as important tools for communication and work. NETATHON.ORG will position us among the dot.coms and open many opportunities.”
UCP indicates that visitors to the site will be able to chat with experts in the field of disability, link to many resources and gain information about local programs. For those interested, there will be contribution forms and a chance to be updated regarding local supporters. Special savings from UCP’s national sponsors will be available exclusively to online visitors. UCP has raised funds via the Internet, as have many other organizations; however, the dedicated site and efforts bringing together a host of activities are of singular note.
